The Pittsburgh Steelers stayed local in filling one of their free roster spots, signing former Pitt and Woodland Hills standout Lafayette Pitts on Friday.
A cornerback, Pitts is joining his fifth NFL team since going undrafted in 2016. He has appeared in 26 NFL regular-season games, playing 123 defensive snaps and 681 special-teams snaps between 2016-18 for Miami, Buffalo and Jacksonville. After getting cut by the Bills at the end of the 2019 training camp, Pitts spent 2020 as part of the Colts and Bills organizations but never on an active roster.
A four-year starter in college, Pitts was a captain as a fifth-year senior for Pitt in 2015.
Pitts, who turns 29 next month, was part of the Tribune-Review’s Terrific 25 after helping Woodland Hills reach the WPIAL Class AAAA title game in consecutive years as a running back and defensive back.
Cornerback DeMarkus Acy was one of two players the Steelers waived/injured Tuesday. Acy posted a message to his Twitter account that he had suffered a torn ACL in his knee.
