The Penguins are set to bring back one of the franchise’s most debated players in recent memory.

Marc-Andre Fleury?

No.

Dominik Simon.

They have agreed to re-sign the 26-year-old forward to a one-year, two-way contract worth a league-minimum $750,000 at the NHL level.

After the Penguins allowed Simon to walk as a free agent in the 2020 offseason, he spent last season with the Calgary Flames, largely being shuffled between the NHL roster and taxi squad. In 11 games, he did not record a point. He also played in one game for the Stockton Heat, Calgary’s AHL affiliate, failing to collect a point.

Simon completed a one-year contract for a league minimum $700,000.

The left-handeder was a fifth-round pick (No. 137 overall) of the Penguins in 2015 and spent the first five seasons of his NHL career with the Penguins.

Occasionally used as a linemate to franchise center Sidney Crosby — a deployment that was usually met with much consternation by critics — Simon (5-foot-11, 190 pounds) has appeared in 164 career games with the Penguins and scored 64 points (19 goals, 45 assists).

Daily Faceoff first reported this transaction.
