An event celebrating youth creativity in Freeport was postponed because of thunderstorms Wednesday.

The original plan was to host two Celebrating Creativity Galas — one on Wednesday evening and one on July 24.

The event will now be solely on July 24 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., said Jennifer Covey, who owns JLC Studios in Freeport and is co-hosting the event with the Freeport Renaissance Association, a community group dedicated to promoting and beautifying Freeport.

Covey was disappointed to postpone the event, but said the July gala will now be “a little larger than before.”

Wednesday’s event was set to include a brief ceremony to dedicate three peace poles that now adorn Freeport’s Hope Garden, which the Freeport Renaissance Association owns and maintains. The peace poles — 8-foot-tall decorative poles bearing inspirational messages and artwork — were installed last week.

The largest of the three poles features mosaics created by about 30 local students, ranging from first through 10th grade.

The Celebrating Creativity Gala will showcase local youth and their creativity. Local singers will perform, and an art show hosted at JLC Studios will feature youth artwork. The sidewalks will be lined with vendors — all local children and teens — who will be selling homemade baked goods, jewelry, candles and artwork.

Covey previously told the Tribune-Review that the Celebrating Creativity Gala was meant to celebrate the artistic talent of local kids and teenagers, and the peace poles were designed to uplift the community and remind them that people care.
