Two weeks after claiming utility man Ildemaro Vargas off waivers from the Chicago Cubs, the Pirates traded him to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday for cash.

Vargas, 29, started his major-league career with the Diamondbacks in 2017 before splitting time last season between the Cubs and Minnesota Twins.

The Pirates designated Vargas for assignment Sunday to make room for pitcher Chase De Jong. Vargas appeared in seven games for the Pirates, with one hit and one RBI in 13 at-bats. He played third base and left field.

With the Cubs this season, he had three hits — two doubles and a single — in 21 at-bats and started four games, three at second base and one at shortstop.

He has a career slash line of .239/.272/.368.
