Republican voters appeared to favor incumbent John Mylant over challenger Doug Murphy in Tuesday’s primary battle for Unity supervisor.

Mylant had about 64% of the vote, with all precincts reporting. He had received 1,929 votes to 1,071 for Murphy, according to unofficial returns.

Mylant, 58, is completing his second six-year term as a supervisor. Before that, he was in business for 16 years, as a partner and owner of Hometown Fuel.

He has a commercial driver’s license that is required to operate heavy equipment. As is the case with his two fellow supervisors, Mylant also works as a roadmaster, overseeing township road workers and projects.

Murphy, 59, who is semi-retired, sells and buys muscle cars as a hobby and previously was a category manager with Giant Eagle in Pittsburgh. He operated heavy equipment for 35 years in a supplemental excavating enterprise.

Previously registered as a Democrat, Murphy ran two prior failed campaigns for supervisor.

There were 649 write-in votes on the Democratic side.
