Chicago Cubs center fielder Ian Happ was forced to leave Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds after a collision in the outfield with second baseman Nico Hoerner.

Happ, a Mt. Lebanon graduate, collided with Hoerner in the bottom of the eighth inning while chasing down a looping fly ball off the bat of Tyler Stephenson in shallow center. Hoerner made the catch but struck Happ on his way to the ground.

Cubs trainers and manager David Ross immediately ran to check on both players. A cart was brought out for Happ, who remained on the ground for several minutes. Happ came up with a bloody nose and, after being helped to his feet, needed to sit back down.

“He feels fine,” Ross said. “Pretty good blow to the face. I haven’t heard the doctor’s report yet, but I did talk to Ian and he’s in good spirits.”

In the top of the eighth, Happ drilled a three-run homer off Tejay Antone that tied the score 12-12.

The Cubs eventually lost 13-12 in 10 innings.

“Seeing that really kind of got to me,” teammate Kris Bryant said. “Hearing the two of them come together like that, being close to it. … I don’t want to see that again.”
