After postponing a week of practice sessions last month for covid-related protocols, Pitt officials decided to move the date of the Blue-Gold Spring Game to April 24. The game had been scheduled for April 17.
Start time (1 p.m.) and admission cost (free) at Heinz Field remain the same.
Coach Pat Narduzzi said he had the entire team in attendance Tuesday — the seventh of 15 spring sessions allowed by the NCAA — after everyone came off covid quarantine and was cleared to practice.
He said he pondered several schedule options to make up for lost time, but he and Pitt officials ultimately decided pushing back the schedule was the best solution.
“I thought I’d be cheating the team if I practiced (Tuesday), then had another one (Wednesday) or have one on Good Friday. Just didn’t want to do it. I wanted to wait until our guys were all back.
“I don’t want to speed it up. We need this development time, selfishly. We have to take our time, look at the tape, make all the corrections. That’s what coaches do.
“To rush it, we’ll rush our kids physically and mentally and I don’t think we’ll get as much out of them.”
Pitt anticipates an opportunity to allow a limited number of fans into Heinz Field for the game. More details will be announced at a later date.
