One of the Penguins’ top prospects is one step closer to making his NHL debut.

Defenseman P.O Joseph formally was recalled from the taxi squad on an emergency basis Friday morning.

His recall comes three days after defensemen Marcus Pettersson and Juuso Riikola were sidelined for several weeks with undisclosed injuries.

Joseph, 21, was a first-round draft pick (No. 23 overall) of the Arizona Coyotes in 2017. The Penguins acquired him in June 2019 as part of a trade that sent forward Phil Kessel to the Coyotes.

During the 2019-20 season, Joseph made his professional debut, appearing in 52 American Hockey League games with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and recorded 17 points (three goals, 14 assists).

The Penguins are scheduled to host the New York Rangers at 7 p.m. Friday.
