Back in the WPIAL where he once was a star quarterback, Demetrious Cox spent this past fall coaching defensive backs at West Mifflin.

But the 26-year-old Jeannette alumnus, who went on to play at Michigan State and got a taste of the NFL, is not ready to call it a career as a player.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League announced Friday the signing of Cox, who will suit up as a defensive back.

A 6-foot, 200-pounder, Cox played four games with the Carolina Panthers in 2017 and also spent time on the practice squads of the Cincinnati Bengals, Panthers and Arizona Cardinals before rejoining the Bengals two years ago. He was released in the preseason.

Most recently, Cox played for the New York Guardians in a reboot of the XFL that was stalled by the covid-19 pandemic. The league is expected make another comeback in 2022.

Winnepeg opens the 2021 season on June 10.
