Pitt defensive end Rashad Weaver reached consensus All-America status Thursday when he was named to the first team by the American Football Coaches Association.

It is Weaver’s third first-team honor — the Associated Press and Football Writers Association of America previously honored him — and the seventh overall.

The AFCA All-America Team is among five used in the NCAA’s selection of an annual college football consensus All-America team. The other selectors are the AP, FWAA, Sporting News and Walter Camp Football Foundation. The Walter Camp team will be released Jan. 7.

Weaver is Pitt’s 52nd all-time consensus All-American. Only eight schools have more.

Pitt’s most recent consensus All-Americans are kick returner Quadree Henderson (2016) and defensive tackle Aaron Donald (2013).

Weaver, who recorded 14½ tackles for loss, 7½ sacks and three forced fumbles this season, is joined on the AFCA team by Pitt’s other defensive end, Patrick Jones II, who was named to the second team after leading the ACC with nine sacks.
