Police detained the driver of a car who they say struck a Port Authority bus shelter and then shot a bicyclist Tuesday afternoon.

Pittsburgh police responded to a report of a crash on Seventh Street near Fort Duquesne Boulevard around 3:45 p.m., and arrived to find a male cyclist who had been shot in the leg.

Police said the man had gotten into an altercation with a motorist, identified as 46-year-old Christian Johnson of Knoxville, who drove his vehicle onto the curb and struck a PAT bus shelter. Afterward, he got out and shot at the cyclist, hitting him in the leg, officials said.

The cyclist was taken to a local hospital and is in stable condition, police said.

Johnson was taken into custody and questioned. Police charged him with criminal attempt homicide, aggravated assault, aggravated assault by vehicle, gun charges, receiving stolen property, recklessly endangering another person and reckless driving.

Police noted the incident was not a random act, and that Johnson and the cyclist knew each other.

Fort Duquesne Boulevard was closed briefly as police investigated.
