The Pittsburgh Penguins signed minor league forward Josh Currie to a one-year, two-way contract worth $700,000.
Currie, 27, has spent the bulk of his seven-year professional career in the American Hockey League (AHL). Last season, he appeared in 56 AHL games with the Bakersfield Condors and led that team in goals (24) and points (41). It marked the fourth consecutive season Currie reached the 20-goal mark at the AHL level.
Currie’s only NHL experience came in the form of 21 games and five points (two goals, three assists) with the Edmonton Oilers in 2018-19.
He recently completed a two-year, two-way contract with the Oilers that carried a salary cap hit of $687,500.
The signing of Currie (5-foot-10, 172 pounds) figures to boost the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins’ lineup, which could lose the services of free agent forwards such as Riley Barber, Adam Johnson and Phil Varone.
