Imagine ordering a pizza, driving to pick it up and having a Super Bowl MVP run it out to your car.
It could happen.
October is National Pizza Month and Super Bowl XLIII MVP and former Steelers wide receiver Santonio Holmes is partnering with Caliente Pizza & Draft House. The company is a supporter of Holmes’ III & Long Foundation, a charity he founded to help raise awareness of Sickle Cell Disease. His son Santonio “TJ” Holmes III, was diagnosed with the disease as a child.
On Oct. 9, Holmes will deliver Caliente’s pizza to vehicles picking up take-out orders at its Monroeville location between 7:30 and 8:30 p.m.
“I am definitely two things, a pizza fan and an MVP,” said Holmes. “Eating at Caliente will pretty much let the two collide since this is some award-winning pizza, and I get to reap the benefits while I’m in town.”
Earlier that day, Holmes is kicking off his fourth annual Strikes Against Sickle Cell pop-up bowling tour, a two-day mobile event.

On Oct. 10, 10 Caliente customers chosen in a random drawing at its Bloomfield location will get to “bowl with the champ” and have a private meet and greet with Holmes.
Founded in 2011, The III & Long Foundation’s goal is to raise awareness to help fight Sickle Cell Disease with financial support and treatment options for families affected by the disease.
“I look forward to bowling strikes against Sickle Cell every year in Pittsburgh because it’s my home away from home, and the supporters and fans have always helped me in my fight against the disease that has haunted our family,” said Holmes. “My son T.J. is currently under treatment for this disease, and I am fighting the fight daily to help him, and others, live an ordinary life through raising funds for treatment, research, and other support.”
Holmes is best remembered by Steelers fans for catching a game-winning 6-yard touchdown pass from Ben Roethlisberger with 35 seconds left in Super Bowl XLIII to defeat the Arizona Cardinals 27-23. In all, Holmes caught nine passes for 131 yards to become the third Pittsburgh wide receiver to win a Super Bowl MVP award.
