It took nine games, but the Pittsburgh Pirates finally got new manager Derek Shelton his first victory of spring training.
That it came against the Minnesota Twins only made it sweeter for Shelton, who spent the previous two seasons as their bench coach.
Jose Osuna’s RBI double in the sixth inning led the Pirates to a 2-0 victory over the Twins in a Grapefruit League game Saturday night at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers, Fla.
Derek Holland allowed two hits and one walk while striking out two in 2⅔ innings but left with the bases loaded in the third. Blake Weiman got out of the jam, striking out Eddie Rosario to end the inning.
Third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes, who went 1 for 2 with a walk, hit a leadoff single off Taylor Rogers, advanced to third on JT Riddle’s double to center and scored on Osuna’s double to left in the sixth.
Clay Holmes left in the bottom of the sixth after taking a ball off his foot.
The Pirates (1-7-1) added an insurance run in the ninth when Kevin Kramer singled to score Will Craig.
Joe Musgrove is expected to start when the Pirates play the Toronto Blue Jays at 1:05 p.m. Sunday at LECOM Park in Bradenton.
