The first results of the planned police drive on slot machines and punch boards in New Kensington netted two arrests. Both men arrested were store owners on Fourth Avenue.

A packed house at the East Deer High gym watched the Bucks defeat rival Tarentum, 32-29. Tom Shondeck led East Deer with 18 points while Bob Holliday led the Tarentum quintet in scoring with 11.

Mailbox dispute hits Gilpin
The Leechburg Post Office is requiring households in the RD5 and RD4 areas to raise their mailboxes so drivers in the new postal delivery trucks can reach them. Those not complying have been threatened with suspended deliveries.

Supervisors are hopeful they have reached a compromise between farmers who want to sell their land to developers and residents who want the township to remain rural. A new ordinance provides for a rural-residential-agricultural zone that offers a proportional scale for chopping up farmland.

About 100 officers from various police departments lined up outside the Penn Hills Municipal Building for a ceremonial “roll call” by a dispatcher over a police radio as the funeral for Officer Michael Crawshaw, killed in the line of duty, got under way.

Local educator named Pa. Teacher of Year
Fox Chapel Area music teacher Mairi Cooper has been named Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year. Among the 14-year teacher’s duties are Advanced Placement music theory, orchestra, piano and world music.
