Tax credits for two redevelopment projects in Indiana County will pave the way for public space and a renovated community center.
A $56,250 tax credit will go to the Friends of Blairsville Communities group for the demolition of the G.C. Murphy building at the corner of Market and Stewart streets in Blairsville. Following demolition, the property will serve as a community space and park.
“As the G.C. Murphy building has fallen into disrepair in recent years, this project will eliminate a massive public safety issue,” said state Rep. Jim Struzzi, R-Indiana, who announced the tax credits on Monday. Struzzi said the project will increase surrounding property values “while providing an attractive community area for residents and investors.”
The Chevy Chase Community Center in White Township will receive a $37,500 tax credit for the renovation of its facilities, including roof replacement, new security doors, new flooring and windows and more.
The center’s soup kitchen serves more than 10,000 meals annually to people in the county and also offers basic education programs, food preparation and shopping programs.
The tax credits were awarded through the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development’s Neighborhood Assistance tax credit program.
