The coming 2020 theater season, which begins in February, will mark Stage 62’s 58th year of providing community theater and will mark its 29th season in residence at the Andrew Carnegie Free Library & Music Hall in Carnegie.

The season will kick off with “Goodnight Moon: The Magical Musical” in February 2020. That will be followed with “Forever Plaid” in May 2020, “Anything Goes” in July, and “9 to 5” in November 2020.

The current season concludes Nov. 14-16 and 21-23 with a production of “Hairspray.”

Stage 62 was formed in 1962 by the members of a Bethel Park Recreation Department program in theater arts. Shows originally were staged at the Bethel Park Junior High School, which was renamed North Middle School in 1973, and then at the Park Avenue School following renovations in 1977.

Occasionally, shows were performed at Bethel Park High School. Between 1975 and 1978, Independence Middle School was used.

The group originally performed two shows a year, generally a fall musical and a spring comedy or drama.

In 1979, a children’s show was added, starting with “Jack and the Beanstalk.”

In 1990, because of the deteriorating condition of Park Avenue School, the group urgently needed to move to a different location and was fortunate enough to find another facility in the Andrew Carnegie Free Library & Music Hall. The first show in their new home was “Godspell.”

The volunteer group, comprised of people with a variety of experiences and theatrical interests, now produces four main stage shows each year, ranging from musicals to classic plays, original works and children’s tales.

“Hairspray,” directed by Arthur DeConciliis, will be performed at 8 p.m. Nov. 14-16 and 21-23. Matinees will be at 2 p.m. Nov. 17 and 24.
