A Plum man is dead after having what appeared to be a “medical emergency” while driving Wednesday in Penn Hills, according to police.

John Monroe, 57, of Plum died at a hospital shortly before 7 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s office.

The report said the crash happened shortly after 6 p.m. in the 6300 block of Leechburg Road.

“We don’t believe his death had anything to do with the crash. He was having an emergency before that,” Penn Hills police Chief Howard Burton said.

Citing a witness who drove behind Monroe moments before the crash, Burton said the man was driving under the speed limit when his car drove up against a guard rail for about 20 feet.

“There was a break in the guard rail for a private residence. He continued into the driveway and went down over a hill and hit a tree,” Burton said.

The police chief said it was a low-impact crash and that there were no signs of trauma to Monroe’s body.

There were no other vehicles involved in the crash, Burton said.
