Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby’s No. 87 jersey will undoubtedly hang in the rafters of PPG Paints Arena shortly after he announces his retirement someday.
The Coliseum Sun Life Financial won’t have to wait to host a similar celebration.
Crosby’s junior team, the Rimouski Oceanic, announced Thursday that it will retire Crosby’s No. 87 jersey as part of the club’s 25th anniversary celebration Sept. 27.
“Sidney is a great man, the best hockey player in the world, and still loves our city, our team, and our fans,” team president Eric Boucher said in a release. “Twenty-five years is a big moment in our history, and there is no better manner than this to begin that celebration.”
Crosby played two seasons for the Oceanic from 2003-05, leading the team to a Quebec Major Hockey League championship as a 17-year-old.
He is second on the franchise’s all-time scoring list with 303 points. Longtime NHL star Brad Richards is first with 432 points in three seasons. Former Penguins winger Michel Ouellet is third with 299 points in four seasons.
