Dave Antill did not qualify for the U.S. Mid-Amateur, but the former Hannastown Golf Club member made a lasting memory in his attempt to play in the national championship.

Antill, playing in a USGA qualifier Monday at Pinnacle Golf Club in Grove City, Ohio, made a hole-in-one on the 198-yard, par-3 seventh hole. He hit an 8-iron and saw the ball go in.

“I was ready to withdraw because I couldn’t walk from severe knee pain,” Antill said. “Somehow, I played through on one leg . I didn’t fair too well on the back nine as the pain took its toll.”

Antill, of Dublin, Ohio and formerly of Harrison City, shot 7-over-par 79 and finished tied for 36th.

Antill is a former Westmoreland County Senior Amateur champion. He moved to Ohio in December to be closer to his daughter.

The top three players — Nicholas Reardon, Michael Cress and Andrew Montooth, all from Columbus — advanced to the Mid-Amateur set for Sept. 14-19 at Colorado Golf Club in Parker, Colo.
