Chris Tanabe’s biggest win prior to Wednesday was winning the PIAA Class AA title in 2016.
Now, the 2017 Quaker Valley graduate has the Pennsylvania Golf Association’s Amateur championship on his resume.
The Bucknell junior fired a 1-over-par 71 during the final round to finish at 5-under 205 and hold off Nate Menon and Kyle Vance, who finished at 3-under 207, at Aronimink Golf Club. Tanaba shot a 5-under 65 in the first round Tuesday.
Peters Township’s Connor Schmidt tied for fourth at 2-under, Brett Young of Nemacolin Country Club was sixth. Latrobe’s Brady Pevarnik tied for 14th, Jake Collon was 26th and Greensburg’s Mark Goetz and Pittsburgh’s Sasha Lobel tied for 35th.
Aber wins Senior Championship
Allegheny Country Club head pro and Greensburg native John Aber won the Tri-State PGA Senior Professional Championship at Wildwood Golf Club. Aber shot a 4-over 146 to edge Ed Vietmeier and Joe Boros, each at 6-over 148.
The trio, along with Roy Vucinich and Ty Roush, qualify for the 2019 PGA Senior Professional Championship.
Jackson tied for 7th at Junior PGA
Usually a 4-under 66 puts a golfer in the lead at a tournament. Back-to-back 66s would probably extend that lead.
But not at the Boys Junior PGA Championship at Keney Park Golf Course in Hartford, Conn., where record scores are dominating the action.
Franklin Regional graduate Palmer Jackson posted his second 4-under par 66 during Round 2 and finds himself six shots behind first-round co-leader Canon Claycomb.
Jackson, who will be attending Notre Dame in the fall, enters the final round in seventh place with an 8-under 132. Claycomb is at 14-under 126
Jake Beber-Frankel is second at 13-under following his record round of 10-under 60.
The field of 144 was cut to 70.
South Fayette’s Luke Lestini didn’t make the cut after finishing with a 7-over 147.
