I admit that the name “dessert hummus” is sort of baffling to the mind and the taste buds.

You can imagine the slightly gritty, savory texture of pulverized chickpeas in traditional hummus but can’t quite image how “sweet” can come anywhere near this popular appetizer.

Two weeks ago, I was a skeptic just like you.

Hummus flavors like sun-dried tomato and roasted red pepper are all the rage, but a co-worker suggested I try to make a sweet hummus — a dessert hummus. She had seen them on Pinterest, and read the overwhelmingly positive comments.

So off I went in pursuit of a sweet hummus recipe. The only problem I pondered was that hummus is supposed to be healthy. I didn’t want to load it up with heavy nut butters and certainly not any sugar.

So here it is, folks — my version of dessert hummus. It’s sweetened only with the natural flavors of banana and a tablespoon of honey. The two mild flavors block out any actual chickpea taste. You still get the protein-packed nutrition, but end up with a frozen banana ice cream, of sorts. Top with a few chocolate chip minis or nuts for fun and extra texture, and I kid you not, you will be eating this by the spoonful!

It’s a totally healthy way to satisfy your sweet tooth — and who doesn’t need more of those?

Banana Dessert Hummus

Ingredients

15-ounce can chickpeas, drained

3 large frozen bananas

3-4 tablespoons almond milk (or your favorite milk)*

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 tablespoon honey

2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Directions

Combine all ingredients in a food processor and process until smooth. *Add more or less milk for desired consistency.

Serve with strawberries, apple slices, graham crackers — or eat it all by itself.

It’s that good!
