A Monroeville student will move on to a district spelling bee after correctly spelling the winning word “comrades.”

Pierre DeFelice, a third grader at Divine Mercy Academy, received $300 for spelling the winning word correctly. He will move on to the Rotary District 7300 Spelling Bee at Seven Springs Mountain Resort on May 11.

The Rotary Club of Monroeville held its annual spelling bee for third-grade students on April 24 at Gateway Middle School.

There were 17 third-grade students who participated from Gateway and Divine Mercy Academy.

Hamsini Bandari, from University Park Elementary School, and Andrea Girgenti, from Ramsey Elementary School, finished in second and third place, respectively.
