After having an apparent third-period goal waved off by officials, Alex Ovechkin was sent to the locker room early as the Washington Capitals suffered a 5-2 loss in Game 6 of a first-round playoff series against the Carolina Hurricanes on Monday night.

With the Hurricanes leading 3-2 with less than 10 minutes left, Ovechkin jammed the rebound of an Evgeny Kuznetsov shot under goalie Petr Mrazek.

Referees immediately waved off the goal, and the decision was confirmed via video review. The NHL’s statement after the replay concluded Ovechkin “interfered with Petr Mrazek by pushing his pad, which caused the puck to enter the net.”

With a little more than a minute left, Ovechkin was called for slashing after giving Carolina’s Saku Maenalanen a two-handed whack with his stick. Ovechkin gave a sarcastic round of applause to officials while heading to the penalty box and given a 10-minute misconduct.

Game 7 is Wednesday night. The winner will face the New York Islanders in the second round.
