Elected officials and emergency personnel from the North Hills were on hand Wednesday to mark a milestone in the construction of the new neighborhood hospital being built by Allegheny Health Network — raising the structure’s final steel beam.
The nearly 50,000-square-foot, 4-story building is at the corner of Duncan Avenue and McKnight Road in the McCandless Crossing Shopping Center.
In addition to an emergency department and 10-bed inpatient unit, the hospital will provide diagnostic imaging, laboratory and other medical services.
AHN McCandless also will be a home to the health-care network’s women’s health services, including its infertility program. Area women and couples will have on-site access to in-vitro fertilization and other therapies in reproductive medicine.
The hospital is expected to begin seeing patients later this year.
AHN is partnering with Texas-based Emerus to build and manage four new neighborhood hospitals in the region.
In addition to McCandless, AHN and parent company Highmark Health are building small hospitals in Hempfield, Harmer and Brentwood as part of a plan announced last year to invest $1 billion in new facility construction and expansion and renovation of existing facilities during the next five years.
