Dismissal begins at Norwin Schools after temporary lockdown

Norwin School District began dismissing students about 3:30 p.m. Friday after an hour-long delay due to an ongoing police investigation.
Tim Kotch, assistant superintendent of secondary education with the school district, said that North Huntingdon Police requested the delay due to an ongoing, active criminal investigation. However, parents were notified via test messages and email that the public safety threat locally was no longer an issue.
“Based on the information we received from North Huntingdon Police, who are involved in an investigation, we have delayed dismissal and have put the school district on modified lockdown,”Kotch said.
“Parents have been notified by email and text message. We’ve also advised parents not to go to their child’s respective schools to pick up their children and we’ll notify everyone when school is able to be dismissed,” he said.
The delay came as Irwin Police were investigating a possible arson on Greene Street about 1:30 p.m. and were seeking a suspect. Schools normally begin dismissal about 2:15 p.m.
