Franklin Regional senior Tom Bright brought home a third-place finish from the American Welding Society’s 38th annual Weld-Off Competition.

Bright, who is a welding student at Northern Westmoreland Career and Technical Center, was among participants from 30 technical schools in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio.

Bright earned two certifications in vertical and overhead positions using shielded metal arc welding, a manual process that uses an electrode covered with flux to lay a weld.

Bright won a $100 prize and was presented Feb. 19 with an award during a ceremony at the Steamfitters Local 449 Technology Center in Harmony.
